Design
Made for Koper
Grand Koper is shaped by the city around it, but is also part of what moves the city forward. That has been true in different ways throughout its history.
In 2021, entrepreneurs Aleš Piščanc and Marja Černe reimagined the city’s beloved landmark with an ambition to create a place that reflects the spirit of modern Koper while preserving the openness and character that made it special for generations. Their vision was to bring new energy to Koper’s tourism and social life, while creating a contemporary destination, remaining deeply connected to the city.
Designer David Tavčar and AKSL Architects took inspiration from the building’s history, the Mediterranean and the city itself. Art, objects and unexpected details such as the sun, fish, goats and hand-painted plates around the hotel tell little stories about the place we call home. The result is an interior recognised with the BIG SEE Interior Design Award.
That connection goes beyond design. We work with local producers and partners, welcome businesses and events from Slovenia and abroad and keep bringing new people, collaborations and ideas through our door, creating more reasons to visit the city throughout the year.

Through the Decades
1939 → Designed as a school by architect F. Mazzoni and never completed due to the war
1949 → Architect Edo Mihevc transforms the unfinished building into a hotel
1952 → Hotel Triglav opens on New Year’s Eve and immediately becomes the social heart of post-war Koper
1955 → Bar Triglav opens, its terrace hosting the dances that brought together a city in transition
2021 → Reimagined as Grand Koper by Aleš Piščanc and Marja Černe, a new chapter begins
